Cavs get huge benefit thanks to new CBA changes

The Cavs have been given a gift by the new CBA as the NBA and players union eliminated a cap on the number of max contracts a team can have.

As new details get released about the new NBA CBA agreement, the Cavs are seen as a team that will benefit from the new rules. Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that restrictions have been eliminated on the new CBA that only allowed a team to sign two players at a time to a max contract.

The Cavaliers already have Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell on max deals. This will allow them to retain Mitchell and Garland and still offer Evan Mobley a max extension when he is eligible. If Mobley continues his growth, he will certainly stay in Cleveland as every player aims to secure generational wealth on their first contract.

Can the Cavs win a title with Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley?

The Cavs are going into the first season of this core with a home-court advantage in the first round. While the Nets have a shot to end up being their first-round opponent, the Knicks are their likeliest matchup.

In their first year in the Donovan Mitchell era, they have a chance to get to the second round. While they might not be title contenders this season, they can be if Evan Mobley takes the leaps that he is expected to on the offensive end.

The CBA was viewed fairly negatively when details were first released. Players were allowed to buy shares in gambling companies and a second tax apron where owners would be penalized be losing mid-level exceptions. With this new change in the CBA and players getting their fair share of licensing via its’ inclusion in the BRI (players getting a fair share for the team’s license being used by companies), this CBA isn’t as bad as initially seemed.

Whether this core of Garland, Mobley, and Mitchell stay in Cleveland long term will depend on playoff success and other factors. Still, this recent change in the new CBA allows for the opportunity to keep this core together long-term in Cleveland.
