NBA rumors: Colorado police investigating Ja Morant gun incident

The NBA is currently investigating Ja Morant for flashing a handgun in a Denver club. Now there is word the police are looking into it as well.

Ja Morant has been at the center of the NBA news cycle for the past few days, with a new Washington Post report that added details to previously reported incidents of threatening violence. Then Morant appeared on an Instagram Live video this weekend flashing a gun while partying inside a Denver club.

The Grizzlies announced that Morant would be away from the team for at least two games but there is reason to believe that could turn into a suspension of as long as 50 games. Language in the CBA prohibits NBA players from bringing firearms, even legally owned and permitted ones, into NBA facilities or team transportation — including the team plane which Morant presumably took to Denver with his teammates.

The league is continuing to investigate but now there is word that Colorado police are investigating as well.

Why would Colorado police be investigating Ja Morant?

According to ESPN, Colorado laws prohibit possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. Per an AP report, “Capt. Jamie Dillon said police did not receive any calls or complaints about Morant’s actions but began looking into them Saturday after learning about the video circulating online.”

Morant issued the following statement after the weekend’s events.

“I take full responsibility for my actions last night. I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire organization for letting you down. I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”

As of right now, there is no timeline for the police or NBA investigations.
