How certain are we the Atlanta Hawks are going to be any better this season?

Despite having many promising young players, the Atlanta Hawks didn’t exactly build a lot of excitement with their transactions this summer. What happened?

The Atlanta Hawks ended last season on an optimistic note, with Trae Young making a late surge in the Rookie of the Year race and John Collins flashing signs of maybe having All-Star potential.

It also helped that coming into the year, expectations were at rock bottom, with Las Vegas setting their 2018-19 over/under win total at a league-worst 23.5.

So behind the promising play of Young and Collins and surprising rookie Kevin Huerter, Atlanta entered the offseason with some momentum and excitement for the future. Did the Hawks capitalize on it by continuing to build around their young core?

Eh.

On a new episode of Fastbreak Breakfast, we posit this question to Jeff Siegel. Jeff runs EarlyBirdRights.com and covers the Hawks for Peachtree Hoops. While he still believes in the upside of the Young/Huerter/Collins nucleus, he isn’t exactly gushing with praise for their summer moves.

Among the topics covered:

  • Despite the possible improvements internally, could this team actually be worse because of the loss of contributing veterans?
  • What was the point of the Kent Bazemore for Evan Turner trade?
  • How does Jabari Parker fit? Will Alex Len be able to handle a larger role? Who plays backup point guard?
  • In the wake of the Luka Doncic for Young trade, is there any extra pressure riding on the front office after moving up to acquire De’Andre Hunter in the 2019 NBA Draft?

And finally, unrelated to the Hawks, we debate where D’Angelo Russell stands in the hierarchy of guards in the Western Conference. Will the All-Star from last year even sniff the conversation this year? Would the Nets have been better last season if you swapped Russell for say, Devin Booker? Going forward, would you rather build your team around Russell, Jamal Murray or De’Aaron Fox?
