Thunder retain sharpshooting big man Muscala

The Oklahoma City Thunder have re-signed forward/center Mike Muscala, the team announced Thursday.

Muscala had a team option for 2022-23 that Oklahoma City had previously declined. Terms of the signing were not released by the team.

Muscala, 30, quietly had another excellent year as a sharpshooting big man for the rebuilding Thunder last season.

Despite playing just under 14 minutes per game, Muscala got up 3.8 3-pointers per game and hit them at a 42.9% clip. He joined Karl-Anthony Towns as the only players 6-foot-10 or taller to shoot 40% on that many 3-pointers, despite playing fewer than half the minutes of Towns.

Like several of the Thunder’s players, Muscala was shut down midway through last season. He underwent a procedure on his right ankle but was expected to return to full basketball activities before the 2022-23 season.

A second-round pick in 2013, Muscala spent his first five seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. After brief stints with the 76ers and Lakers in 2018-19, Muscala has spent the last three seasons with the Thunder.
