Spurs release Josh Primo after disturbing allegations: Everything to know

The San Antonio Spurs released 2021 first-round pick Josh Primo after allegedly exposing himself to multiple women.

Josh Primo was the 12th-overall selection in the 2021 NBA Draft, and was just 19 years old entering the season. San Antonio saw plenty of promise in Primo on the court, but the off-court allegations forced the Spurs hand (and rightly so).

San Antonio picked up Primo’s 2023-24 team option this offseason, a vote of confidence in his development.

Primo chalked the release up as mental health struggles, though the allegations against him suggest a darker path.

“I know that you all are surprised by today’s announcement,” Primo said. “I’ve been seeking help to deal with previous trauma I suffered and will now take this time to focus on my mental health treatment more fully. I hope to be able to discuss these issues in the future so I can help others who have suffered in a similar way. I appreciate privacy at this time.”

Why did the Spurs release 2021 first-round pick Josh Primo?

Josh Primo’s production won’t necessarily be missed, as he averaged under six points per game last season. His potential and development into a top-tier NBA talent has gone out the window, for now.

As of now, there is very little information available as to the nature of the allegations against Primo. Spurs CEO RC Buford released a statement, as well, without giving away many details.

“It is our hope that, in the long run, this decision will serve the best interest of both the organization and Joshua,” Buford said.

As a former top draft pick, Primo was on track to take a step forward in the organization this season. Considering the recent news, he will have to do so elsewhere, if any team is willing to give him an opportunity. However, that feels unlikely given the nature of the allegations against him.
