Kings hire Warriors assistant Mike Brown as next head coach

The Sacramento Kings are reportedly hiring Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown as their next head coach.

Early on in the 2021-22 regular season, the Sacramento Kings fired head coach Luke Walton. After their campaign ended, the Kings franchise searched for their new sideline boss. Sure enough, they got their head coach from a division rival.

According to ESPN senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Kings have agreed to terms with Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown on a four-year contract to be their next head coach. Wojnarowski reports that the deal came along over the 24 hours ahead of the report on May 8.

Brown and Kings negotiated deal over the past 24 hours, sources said. Brown emerged in recent days as the focus of franchise’s search and now he’s tasked with helping to end the organization’s 16-year playoff drought.

Kings hire Mike Brown as their next head coach

Brown had been with the Warriors since 2016 as an associate head coach under Steve Kerr. During his tenure, Brown has three NBA Championships to his credit. But prior to that, Brown has extensive head coaching experience.

Back in 2005, Brown was hired as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was a role that he held until 2010. In that span, he was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year in 2009 and helped lead the Cavaliers to their first Eastern Conference Championship in 2007.

After his tenure in Cleveland, Brown became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011. However, he was fired just five games into the 2012-13 season. Brown then went back to Cleveland for a second stint in 2013, but that ended in 2014.

Brown has an overall record of 347-216 in the regular season and a 47-36 record in the playoffs as an NBA head coach.

Now, Brown will be tasked to turn around a Kings franchise that had not been in the NBA playoffs since 2006. The organization certainly feels that he can be the guy to turn their luck around and bring them back into prominence in the tough Western Conference.
