Ben Simmons probably won’t play for the Nets this season after latest update

The Brooklyn Nets won’t have Ben Simmons in the lineup in Game 4, which means the likelihood of the injured star playing this season is pretty much toast.

If the Nets planned on Ben Simmons saving them, that plan has essentially been thrown out the window.

Simmons has not played for Brooklyn since his trade from the 76ers. While his regular season was scuppered, there was hope he could make it back in time to participate in the playoffs.

On Sunday, a new update on his status for Game 4 made it exceedingly unlikely he’ll play at all this season.

Ben Simmons injury update: Nets star unlikely to play this season

“Nets are listing Ben Simmons as OUT for Game 4 vs. Celtics,” Shams Charania tweeted. “A surprise as Simmons had been expected to play Monday as long as rehab was on course.”

Simmons’ status has been closely watched and there will be definite disappointment that he still hasn’t been cleared for full activity. Back injuries are notoriously tricky. His has been an ordeal.

Missing Game 4 doesn’t guarantee Simmons won’t be able to play for the Nets in a hypothetical Game 5, 6 or 7. However, Brooklyn would need to win Game 4 to get to Game 5.

The Nets are favored on Monday at home but anyone who has watched the last two games has ample reason to question their chances in the eliminate game. Kevin Durant has struggled while the team hasn’t matched up to the ferocious defense of the Celtics.

Game 1 was a thrilling battle featuring a buzzer-beater from Jayson Tatum. Games 2 and 3 were also won by Boston.
