Orlando Magic guard Devin Cannady had to be removed from the court on a stretcher after suffering a scary injury against the Pacers.
After the UFC had a terrible injury scare on Saturday night, the sports world could have gone a while without having to see another.
Unfortunately, a similar injury struck the NBA less than 24 hours later.
Magic guard Devin Cannady came down wrong while defending a layup against the Pacers. He had to be stretchered off the court with a serious leg injury.
Cannady’s leg was put in an air cast, which prompted the announcers to ponder the prospect of a broken bone. That would seem about right, though it’s best to wait for an official diagnosis from the Magic before concluding anything.
Magic: Devin Cannady’s injury looked horrible
Descriptions of the injury are disturbing, but they reinforce assumptions about the nature of the injury.
Viewer discretion is advised, but you can watch the moment it happened here.
Cannady’s reaction was immediate and severe. Teammate Mo Bamba draped his ankle with a jersey right after it happened. Trainers responded straight away.
Fortunately, by the time he was stretched off the court, the player was able to clap for the fans and raise his fist.
All injuries like this are painful to see, but for Cannady, it’s particularly unfortunate. The rookie was the MVP of the G League Finals and signed a contract with the Magic just nine days ago.
A three-point threat, Cannady scored 17 points against the Pelicans. It was the best showing of his young career with three triples in five attempts. He was playing good basketball and looked ready to keep doing it.
Now he’s likely to face a long road back from injury with an uncertain future in front of him.
