Timberwolves rookie and No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards had a huge night Sunday and even trolled Carmelo Anthony in the process.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are having another rough season. The team is 9-30 on the year and winning is clearly a rarity. But the the play of No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards is a reason for optimism.
Edwards may be known to casual fans for his highlight-reel dunks during his rookie season, but he is much more than that and proved it Sunday night against the Portland Trail Blazers. Edwards had a new career-high with 34 points and drained six 3-pointers. One of those makes from deep was even capped off with Edwards trolling Carmelo Anthony with the NBA legend’s own celebration.
Anthony Edwards shows confidence against Carmelo Anthony
Edwards is still a teenager and showed no signs of backing down against the 36-year-old Anthony. Anyone who may be upset about potential disrespect should realize this was a fun moment from one of the hopeful future stars of the game.
The rookie played 37 minutes on the night and even provided one of his famous monster dunks in his team’s ninth win of the season.
Edwards continues to look worthy of the No. 1 overall selection, and the Timberwolves should add another elite prospect in this year’s NBA Draft. This points toward a hopeful future for a franchise that has only been to the playoffs once since 2004 (and that only happened because Jimmy Butler came to town and helped the team earn the No. 8 seed in the West).
Anthony and the Trail Blazers will be disappointed with this loss, but they still remain in the heart of the Western Conference playoff race. What this does show is that Edwards and the Timberwolves are no pushover, even with the ugly record.
