The Pistons may be looking to move Andre Drummond at the trade deadline. Here are a few deals that offer a fun spin in both directions.
The Pistons are currently outside the playoff picture and won’t see Blake Griffin on the court again this season. The obvious path forward is figuring out how to shed salary and start over. The first job there would be moving Andre Drummond.
5. Playing it safe
Pistons Get
Davis Bertans
Ian Mahinmi
Troy Brown Jr.
Wizards Get
Andre Drummond
Markieff Morris
The Pistons would probably like to get a much more significant haul for Drummond, a draft pick or talented young player besides just cap relief. This deal delivers the cap relief — both Bertans and Mahinmi are on expiring deals — but there’s no pick and Brown Jr. isn’t that appealing as a piece for the future. However, Bertans has developed into one of the best shooters in the league and if coaxed into re-signing this summer he could be a fun piece to scaffold some of their other young players and a potentially reinvigorated Blake Griffin next season, as absurd as that sounds.
For the Wizards, it just rolls their bloated cap sheet into infinity but, honestly, Drummond is probably a more appealing piece for the next two seasons than anything else they’d do with cap space this summer.
