Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings

NBA Twitter roasts Steph Curry for pulling a Chris Webber: Best memes, tweets

Steph Curry nearly blew it for the Warriors in Game 4 against the Kings, calling a timeout Golden State didn’t have just like Chris Webber.

The Warriors bested the Kings in Game 4 to even the series at 2-2, but they came dangerously close to falling behind 3-1 because of a boneheaded moment from Steph Curry.

Curry, normally a clutch figure for Golden State, allowed Sacramento to pull within one point with half a minute remaining. That’s because he called a timeout the Warriors didn’t have, resulting in a turnover. De’Aaron Fox hit a three-pointer to make it 126-125 soon after.

Here’s the play:

NBA Twitter immediately recognized the mishap as a mirror image of Chris Webber’s notorious timeout call in the 1993 NCAA Tournament Championship Game against North Carolina.

The critical difference between Webber’s mistake and Curry’s? Webber’s timeout call likely cost his team the game. Curry got away with his as the Harrison Barnes’ game-winning attempt bounced off the rim.

That didn’t stop Twitter from commenting on the similarities and the fates of both players.

Curry finished with 32 points, five rebounds and four assists, shooting 5-of-11 from three-point distance. He came close to memeification but almost only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades, so this can be a funny moment to joke about instead of a true frustration.

Draymond Green came back from suspension with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes off the bench. Klay Thompson and Jordan poole pitched in 26 and 22 points respectively.

Fox led the Kings with 38 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The series will move back to Sacramento for Game 5 with both sides trying to break the deadlock. That game will tip off at 10:00 p.m. ET on Wednesda, Apr. 26.
