Devin Booker lands supermax with Suns: Teaming up with Kevin Durant next?

The Phoenix Suns have signed star Devin Booker on a supermax contract. Now, will the team land Kevin Durant to play alongside him?

Hours before the start of NBA free agency at 6:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 30, a bombshell report dropped that revealed Kevin Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. One of the teams listed atop of Durant’s wish list were the Phoenix Suns. But ahead of any trade being negotiated and accepted, the Suns got a huge deal done.

According to The Athletic’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania, the Suns and star Devin Booker have agreed to terms on a four-year, $214 million supermax contract that he will sign as soon as next week.

Oh, and Charania revealed that Booker will be the cover athlete for 2K Sports’ NBA 2K23 video game.

A new contract and landing the cover of a popular video game? How about going for the trifecta and getting Kevin Durant as a new teammate to really make Booker’s offseason?

Suns sign Devin Booker; Is Kevin Durant on the way?

While the Suns seemingly have the advantage in Durant trade negotiations, considering he wants to go there, they have to make an offer that the Nets will accept. This is a team that is looking to contend but also wants to replenish its draft capital.

Recent reports have proven that Brooklyn has a high asking price, as they want trade offers from the Suns to start with Booker, per Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. Additionally, Fischer notes that the Nets are not exactly interested in a sign-and-trade deal for Suns restricted free agent Deandre Ayton.

The Suns were two wins away from winning their first NBA title back in 2021 but blew a 2-0 lead to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Finals. Then this past season, despite having the best record in the entire NBA, they were eliminated in the second round by the Dallas Mavericks.

Getting Durant would greatly increase Phoenix’s chances of making the NBA Finals next season. But it is going to take a massive offer for the Suns to land Durant to team up alongside Booker.
