Steph Curry launches Underrated Golf program for underrepresented players

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is launching a free golf tour for underrepresented players.

The Golden State Warriors recently celebrated their fourth NBA Championship in eight years with a parade this week after defeating the Boston Celtics in six games in the NBA Finals. Stephen Curry won his first NBA Finals MVP award of his career. Now, he is making moves to help increase diversity in golf.

Curry launched Underrated Golf alongside American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), which is a free golf tour for underrepresented players to address the lack of diversity in golf.

“Less than 2% of [junior] golfers are people of color,” Curry said, h/t Andscape. “And our tour provides a platform of equity, access and opportunity to boys and girls that want to play and compete with the current best players of the AJGA.”

The tour’s first event will be held this week at Cog Hill near Chicago, Ill, where 60 players (30 boys and 30 girls) age 12-18 will be participating.

This will be the first of four events on the tour, all of which will be at courses where PGA Tour events have been held. The other three courses are Wickenburg Ranch in Arizona, the Golf Club of Houston in Texas and Copperhead Course in Florida.

The best performers of each tournament (12 boys and 12 girls) will compete in the “Curry Cup” at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

Additionally, each tournament will be all expenses paid for each participant (travel, food and lodging) and travel will be provided for parents. Furthermore, golf club manufacturer, Callaway, will be providing equipment to players who need it.

“This tour is opening doors for young, underrepresented golfers to showcase their skill and play on some of the most revered courses across the country — where they can experience new greens and inspiring views — while elevating their techniques and strategies alongside like-minded players,” said Curry, h/t Andscape.
