Hype is a dangerous thing heading into this year’s NBA Draft. Selecting one of these five players could easily get a GM fired.

Finding an underrated star via the draft is arguably the best way for an NBA team to improve its fortunes. In the same fashion, spending a high lottery pick on a draft flop is a great way for a team to mire itself in mediocrity for years to come.

The following five players are slated to hear their names called in the first round of June’s big event but GMs interested in spending a premium selection on these guys should think again. It’s not that each player will be a complete flop. Instead, it’s just that each guy on this list is going to enter the NBA with expectations he won’t realize.

The list begins with a versatile prospect who should be a long-term contributor but lacks the upside many draft experts believe he possesses.

5. Keegan Murray

Murray is a classic example of a player who would be a steal in the 20s but is destined to be overdrafted as a top-10 selection. The former Iowa star is a polished, versatile wing who is ready to make an immediate impact as a rookie.

The problem is that at 22 years of age there just isn’t much development left in his game. Murray can improve around the margins but he’s never going to develop the sort of quick-twitch athleticism needed to be a primary scorer at the next level. He’s a quality piece but he’ll never be a star. That’s going to make him a severe disappointment for the team that believes they’re acquiring a franchise cornerstone early in the Lottery.
