Trail Blazers fans celebrate firing of Neil Olshey with jubilant Tweetstorm

Portland Trail Blazers fans are over the moon about former general manager Neil Olshey getting fired.

While an inevitable rebuild is coming to the Pacific Northwest, Portland Trail Blazers fans rejoiced over Twitter about former general manager Neil Olshey being relieved from his post.

Olshey had been the main man in the Portland front office for a decade. While the Trail Blazers were a common fixture in the Western Conference Playoffs, the team largely underachieved, despite having Damian Lillard as their All-NBA point guard. An investigation into the toxic work environment Olshey created ultimately led to the organization terminating him on Friday.

Though parting ways with Olshey likely means the beginning of a long-scale rebuilding process, Trail Blazers fans were ecstatic to see their team’s former general manager get the boot.

For a former general manager’s termination to illicit this type of a reaction from the fanbase online, it certainly speaks volumes over how they felt about the team’s direction of late.

Portland leadership will conduct a thorough search to find Olshey’s long-term replacement with Trail Blazers director of player personnel Joe Cronin filling the role of general manager in the interim.

While so much contributed to the Trail Blazers’ decision to move on from Olshey, why did it take so long? They fired former head coach Terry Stotts after last season, which led to a botch job of a coaching search and eventual hiring of Chauncey Billups. Perhaps this has everything to do with the current ownership in place being in a state of flux after the untimely death of Paul Allen?

Trail Blazers fans have every reason to celebrate, but tough days of a rebuild are ahead of them.
