BetMGM announces partnership with Casino del Mar at La Concha Resort

BetMGM has announced a partnership with Casino del Mar at La Concha Resort in Puerto Rico. The resort is located in Condado, San Juan. This is a market access agreement, according to sources. This partnership is also subject to regulatory approvals. What does this intriguing information mean for Puerto Ricans? BetMGM has now expanded its retail and mobile sports betting marketing offerings to the Caribbean territory.

This is the first time the sports betting company has expanded its services outside the United States mainland, and the BetMGM mobile app will be accessible from anywhere on the island. A retail sportsbook will be offered at the beach resort as well. They are now anticipating market regulation soon in the region. Sigfrido de Jesús, the general manager of Casino del Mar at La Concha, commented on the news:

“At Casino del Mar at La Concha Resort, we strive every day to provide the best gaming experience on the island, and this new venture alongside BetMGM is a great example of this. Sports fans in Puerto Rico will now add excitement to their past-time with the possibility of winning more than just a game by their favorite team.” He also made it a point to mention that all gaming offerings for slot machines and card tables are available 24/7 at the casino.

BetMGM continues to preach the importance of responsible gaming education. Orlando A. Rivera Carrión, the executive director of the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission, stated earlier today, “The Government of Puerto Rico welcomes this partnership for the economic development of our island. This new project will promote and encourage growth of the gaming industry in Peurto Rico, all while implementing a public policy that encourages the development of jobs and maximizing the income and resources of the Government of Puerto Rico.”

The sports betting options are plentiful

Moreover, for sports betting, Puerto Rico’s professional basketball league is the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). If bettors wanted to place bets on another league aside from the NBA, the BSN is one of the many options. Plus, the main professional baseball league in Puerto Rico is the Liga de Béisbol Professional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC). Plus, there are over a hundred Puerto Rican baseball players in the MLB.

Regardless, the Caribbean island has various betting markets for gamblers, such as availability for betting on the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, Premier League, Puerto Rico Soccer League (PRSL), Ligo de Fútbol Americano Professional and other leagues. After BetMGM, Bovada could eventually follow suit in the future. However, both FanDuel and DraftKings are not available on the island. On the bright side, wait a bit longer; the times are changing.

Brief history of gambling in Puerto Rico

Back in 1910, horse racing was first legalized on the island. In 1947, the Government of Puerto Rico legalized lottery gambling. One year later, the government legalized casino and bingo gambling, stemming from the “Random Games Law.” In 1956, wagering at off-track horse racing facilities became legalized. Additionally, most of the casinos operate in the San Juan region. Betstars is another popular sportsbook in New Jersey that has been offering odds and bets to Puerto Ricans.

In May 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court did away with the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which had banned sports betting in the Untied States since 1992. After this decision, Puerto Rican politicians discussed Senate Resolution 756. This resolution pertained to projected government earnings via tax revenue based on legalized gambling. In January 2021, Senate Bill 1534, the official sports betting bill, was finally signed into law. Puerto Ricans are still waiting for certain rules and regulations to be passed. Though, when everything is up and running, individuals can use the mobile apps and certified websites to wager bets.
