Here’s how much Luka Doncic will make on his supermax extension

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to give star guard Luka Doncic a supermax contract extension this summer. How much will he make?

Luka Doncic is about to make a whole lot of money this offseason.

The Mavericks star is expected to sign a supermax extension with Dallas after a third outstanding season in the NBA. His 2021 playoff performance alone should convince Mark Cuban to throw as much cash as possible at him.

According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN, when asked about the possibility of a supermax, Doncic smiled and said, “I think you know the answer.”

But how much would a supermax extension actually cost the Mavericks? Bobby Marks of ESPN laid out the details.

Luka Doncic supermax contract extension details revealed

Assuming the NBA salary cap for 2022-23 is $115 million, Doncic would be eligible for $34.7 million in the first year of his extension. His salary would only get bigger from there.

2022-23: $34.7 million

2023-24: $37.5 million

2024-25: $40.3 million

2025-26: $43.1 million

2026-27: $45.9 million

That’s a cool $165.5 million over five years.

Doncic’s rookie deal is set to pay him $10 million in 2021. Talk about a pay raise.

It may be a lot of money, but Doncic has proven worth every penny early in his Mavericks career.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft was the Rookie of the Year. He went on to All-NBA acclaim in his second season by averaging 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game. He came fourth in MVP voting that year.

The 2020-21 season delivered more proof that Doncic is special. He was outstanding in the regular season but took his play to another level in the playoffs by averaging 35.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 10.3 assists per game.

In fact, his playoff performances over the last two years have been outstanding with a scoring average of 33.5 points in 13 total games. The only thing holding him back appears to be his supporting cast.

According to Stathead, he’s the only player in NBA history with more than 20 triple-doubles by the age of 21.
